How do I book my package to hold for pickup at the FedEx facility?
To have your package held for pick up at a FedEx hub, use the Ship To a FedEx Facility function in the "To" field when booking your label. Type in your recipient's zip code and the first address in the drop-down will be your recipient's closest hub. Once selected, the system will auto-fill the address and format.
Be sure to type in your recipient's full name as it appears on their government-issued photo ID and their phone number. Your recipient will need to show their ID and give the tracking number in order to pick up the package.
If your recipient gives you a FedEx address that does not show up in the dropdown, the given location is not a true FedEx Ship Center (hub). Shipping a live package to a FedEx Office, FedEx OnSite (Walgreens), or any third-party Authorized FedEx location will most likely result in the package being refused by that location, and it will end up back on the truck for the remainder of the driver's route. Shipping to any FedEx Office, FedEx OnSite, or any third-party Authorized FedEx location will void any and all On Time and/or Live Arrival insurance coverage.
Note: If your recipient gives you a FedEx address that does not show up in the dropdown, the given location is not a true FedEx Ship Center (hub). Shipping a live package to a FedEx Office, FedEx OnSite (Walgreens), or any third-party Authorized FedEx location will most likely result in the package being refused by that location, and it will end up back on the truck for the remainder of the driver's route. You can also look up your nearest FedEx facility location here.
GTA on Hold for Pickup -- When shipping directly to a FedEx Ship Center, we allow either Priority Overnight or Standard Overnight service. Both of those services arrive at the hub at the same time. MOST of the time, that GTA is going to be 10:30am, even if the FedEx tracking information shows an earlier expected delivery time. However, some Ship Centers are remote enough that they have a later GTA. If your shipment has a Priority Overnight GTA later than 10:30 on a HOLD FOR PICKUP shipment (typically 12:00 noon), then that is the GTA we will go by for Insurance purposes.
How can I tell which main FedEx hub my Express package will be routed through?
You can decode your package routing with the clues found on the FedEx shipping label! Unfortunately, there is no way to tell in advance what the routing will be. You have to book your label first.
The first character in the routing code indicates which hub the package will be routed through. "X" indicates the package will be routed through the main hub in Memphis, TN. "N" indicates Indianapolis, IN. Packages staying within the state are indicated by a numeric character.
There are also smaller regional hubs: "A" is Ft. Worth, TX. "W" is Oakland, CA. "Q" is one of the Los Angeles area hubs. "E" is Newark, NJ. "G" is Atlanta, GA.
Packages can sometimes be rerouted for expediency, so this is 98% accurate. Knowing your main hub routing info can be helpful when checking weather reports for storms or other weather impacts.
FedEx told me they don't ship live animals to residential addresses, is that true?
True-ish.
Redline Shipping has a FedEx exception and provides an approved way to ship live reptiles, aquatics and inverts to and from residences with FedEx.
Typical FedEx-certified live animal shippers are operating under the standard FedEx Live Animal Certification (reptile, aquatics or invertebrate specific, we have all three). This standard agreement says the following:
"Company acknowledges that all shipments tendered to FedEx under this Agreement are for Business to Business delivery only. No residential deliveries are allowed under this agreement."
The unique agreement between Redline Shipping and FedEx specifically allows shipments of live reptiles to and from residential addresses.
While a residential address is fine when shipping through Redline Shipping, a PO Box is NOT. Only US Postal trucks can deliver to a PO Box. FedEx cannot complete a delivery to a PO Box address.
How do I get FedEx to pick up my package?
If you want a FedEx driver to pick up your package at your location, there are four excellent options to do so:
- You can schedule a package pickup during the Book a Shipment process
- Contact Us
- Call 303-347-0500
- Schedule your own pickup directly from our website at Schedule a Pickup
We can typically schedule a same-day Express pickup (Priority Overnight, Standard Overnight, 2Day Express or Express Saver) if you make your request before 12 noon your time.
You can schedule an Express package pickup for one business day in advance.
For Ground shipments, same day package pickup is not available, and driver pickup must be scheduled in advance by at least one business day.
Please be watching and ready for the driver’s arrival.
Note: The pickup fee is $5.
Should I schedule a FedEx pickup?
There are pros and cons of having a FedEx driver pick up your package at your address.
Pro
- You don't have to take your package anywhere.
Con
- You must be available to hand your package to the driver. Your package will generally be picked up in a 3 hour window that you select when scheduling the pickup.
- If you miss the driver’s arrival (you were in the basement, the backyard, in the shower, went out to grab a quick lunch) it is unlikely that we can reschedule the driver to return the same day.
- Your package may be exposed to extreme temperatures (inside the FedEx truck) on exceptionally hot or cold days.
A $5 fee applies to every scheduled pickup, whether you have one box being picked up or dozens.
You can schedule a package pickup during the Book a Shipment process, Contact Us or call 303-347-0500 and we can schedule it for you.
Can I ship packages to Hawaii?
You cannot ship live reptiles to Hawaii with Redline Shipping. Hawaii has strict restrictions on live imports. These restrictions include:
- No reptiles.
- Limited aquatic species.
- Limited plants.
- And more.
Check the Hawaii Department of Agriculture's Importing Plants, Animals and Microorganisms to Hawaii pages for more info.
What if I'm shipping to Alaska?
What if I'm shipping to Alaska?
Because of the remoteness of some areas, Alaska has limited FedEx service. Some locations require one or more additional days for Priority Overnight and Standard Overnight shipping, but there are many locations that FedEx does not provide prompt service for at all.
The Anchorage Metro Area and Fairbanks Metro Area have true overnight shipping, meaning that a shipment to a zip code within one of these cities will arrive in one business day.
For any other city, you should make sure that actual Priority Overnight or Standard Overnight service is available before shipping. To determine if a zip code has true overnight shipping, select our Quick Quote feature and input all the information for the package. Select Get Quote and look carefully at the results. If the indicated delivery day is not the next business day, then it is not a true overnight shipment. In this case, a live animal shipment WOULD NOT BE ALLOWED, you would need to explore separate air freight options through a carrier like Southwest Airlines.
Example: Getting a quote on a Tuesday, the arrival date should say Wednesday. FedEx assumes that you are going to use the label immediately. If the quote says Thursday, then it is not an area serviced for overnight shipments.
The quote below shows that the package would be delivered on Wednesday.
The quote below shows that the package would be delivered on Thursday. This would not be overnight shipping and would void any insurance and live arrival guarantees Live reptiles are NOT ALLOWED to be shipped slower than overnight. In this case you would need to explore separate air freight options through a carrier like Southwest Airlines.
Contact Redline Shipping for further insight and detail on what cities and towns in Alaska have viable shipping options, for live animals or merchandise.
If you ship to a location in Alaska that is not serviced Overnight/Next Day by FedEx, this falls outside of Redline Shipping Terms of Service and insurance coverage will not be valid.
If you have any questions about whether FedEx services an address you are shipping to, please contact Redline Shipping Customer Service at 303-347-0500 or Contact Us.
Can I ship to Puerto Rico?
Yes, BUT...
Puerto Rico has very limited species it allows in and there are multiple requirements beyond our typical booking procedures. A Puerto Rico shipment cannot be booked directly from our website.
Please call 303-347-0500 or Contact Us to find out more and/or to make arrangements for your shipment.
What do I need to know about shipping to Florida?
While not as bad as Hawaii, Florida has some very specific laws and regulations that should be followed. Failure to follow these could result in your shipments being held for inspection, animal confiscation, and/or possibly even fines or jail time.
Many species are not allowed to be shipped into Florida at all. These include (but are not be limited to) African Rock Pythons, Burmese Pythons, Reticulated Pythons, Iguanas, and Tegus.
Special rules for Diamondback Terrapins
Specific import permits are required for ALL non-native reptile and amphibian species being shipped into Florida. Either the shipper or recipient can apply for this permit, but it is the legal responsibility of the recipient in Florida to ensure this permit has been granted for the specific shipment/animals they are receiving.
People selling non-native, non-domestic animals in Florida require a Class 3 permit to do so. Whether for a large business, or a small hobby, or an out-of-state visitor coming to sell at an expo, you need a Class 3 permit to sell. If you have a Class 3, you can use that to apply for an Importation Permit that covers an unlimited number of imports for a one-year period. BUT, you must still inform Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) of the animals you have received in each shipment.
If you do not have a Class 3 permit, then you must apply for an individual Importation Permit each time you have an animal shipped to you. These permits do NOT cost anything to obtain, but they do take a little time. It could be as little as a two-week turnaround, but if they get busy, it could take much longer to obtain. There's really no way to tell.
This is not a new law. This law has been on the books for over 40 years, but it is only sporadically enforced. We've had some recent FWC activity that suggest they may be gearing up to do another round of enforcements, so be aware that FWC may reach out to you if you are having animals shipped to you in Florida. They may also contact the out-of-state shipper to get more details or context about the shipment, even though they have no out-of-state jurisdiction.
Whether you are shipping TO Florida, or receiving animals IN Florida, follow these critical steps:
- Ensure the animals are legal to keep in Florida
- Make sure the boxes are fully compliant with safe shipping practices AND properly labeled for Lacey Act compliance
- Be sure to include, either on the shipping label or inside the box, full and accurate contact information (phone and email) for both the shipper and the recipient
- Do not give FWC any reason to confiscate your animals!
For more information: Florida Captive Wildlife Importation Permit
It is the responsibility of both the shipper and the recipient to be aware of and comply with any and all local, state, and federal laws regarding the import, export, sale of, keeping, and breeding exotic animals.
Can I use dry ice?
NO.
Using this site, you cannot ship a package containing dry ice.
Dry ice is classified as a hazardous material by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). It requires specialized packaging and identification that are not offered through Redline Shipping.
Are live animals safe on FedEx planes?
Yes.
The cargo areas FedEx uses to carry Redline Shipping shipments are pressurized, and their temperatures are kept between 55 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
Are there any guidelines for packaging my shipment?
Yes. Please follow this link for detailed information on packing live shipments.
Where can I drop off my package?
You can drop your package off at a FedEx Hub (known as "FedEx Ship Center" on the FedEx site). There are plenty of these locations, and they are generally convenient to where you live. This makes them perfect for afternoon drop offs.
You want the actual FedEx facility, not a FedEx Office/Kinko's, Walgreens or Pak Mail type spot. Those retail outlets are independently owned businesses and will refuse live shipments. A simple trick to find ONLY the official FedEx Ship Centers is to use this link and use the Filter and select "Dangerous Goods". Reptiles aren't "dangerous goods" but this filter will return ONLY the actual FedEx facility hubs.
When dropping off your shipment, pay close attention to the Last Pickup Time!
FedEx Office has refused to accept my live shipment. What can I do?
FedEx Office, Walgreens, Mailboxes Etc and other 3rd Party FedEx locations are not authorized to deal with live animal shipments. Different locations may or may not enforce this policy, but be aware that many of them ARE enforcing it.
If you are turned away, use this search form at FedEx.com to search for a true FedEx Ship Center (aka "hub").
Or call us at 303-347-0500. We'll help you find another location, or we'll schedule a FedEx driver to pick up your package from your location.
I called FedEx, and they said they don't ship live animals.
If you call or walk into a FedEx facility and ask if you can ship live animals, they will tell you no. This is correct in most cases.
It takes a special FedEx account to allow shipping of live reptiles and aquatics through the FedEx system. FedEx offers a Live Reptile Certification that you have to pass in order to ship live reptiles and aquatics. This can be a time consuming process. Redline Shipping has a specially created FedEx account that not only allows for the shipping of live reptiles, aquatics and inverts, but specifically allows for Redline Shipping third-party shipping of live reptiles, aquatics and inverts.
When you book a live reptile or aquatic shipment through the Redline Shipping site, you will be shipping under the Redline Shipping FedEx certification. When using the Redline Shipping site, you are agreeing to meet our Redline Shipping Standards, including temperature and packaging requirement, which in turn meet the FedEx standards.
In addition, Redline Shipping allows for shipping to and from residential addresses (which is not allowed under the typical FedEx live reptile or aquatics account). Redline Shipping offers an On-Time and Live Arrival Insurance program (also not offered through FedEx directly). Our Priority Overnight and Standard Overnight rate discount starts at 40% off the FedEx retail rate.
Should I require a signature for delivery? (Delivery Confirmation)
We do not recommend you require a signature for delivery of live reptiles, aquatics and inverts, but this is your own individual choice.
If the recipient is not available to accept the Signature Required package from the FedEx driver, the package will go back onto the truck for later delivery, most likely the following day.
In the case of live reptiles and aquatics, it is preferable to have the driver leave the package at the address in a location that’s protected from weather and extreme cold or heat. If signature is NOT required, the FedEx driver (as per FedEx policy) may leave the package at the location at their own discretion. According to FedEx TOS, and Redline Shipping TOS, this counts as a completed delivery.
NOTE: Be sure your customer/recipient is alert, ready, and watching for the imminent arrival of their package.
Does FedEx pick up or deliver on holidays?
In general, no. Please plan your shipments around the FedEx Holiday Schedule.
FedEx observes these holidays:
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving
- Christmas
- New Year’s Eve
- New Year’s Day
Can I schedule a Saturday delivery?
NO.
Live reptile shipments must be shipped Priority Overnight or Standard Overnight, Monday through Thursday only. An overnight shipment on Friday won’t arrive until Monday. That is not acceptable and not allowed.
How can I track my package?
FedEx uses a tracking number to identify and track every shipment as it moves through the system to its destination.
When you book a shipment with Redline Shipping, we give you that package’s tracking number, both on screen and via email. You can also find your tracking number and tracking link on your “Orders” page, under “My Account”.
To track the progress of your shipment from the Redline Shipping home page, enter your tracking number in the box that says “Track a FedEx Shipment”.
This will send you to the FedEx tracking results page, where you’ll get all the information you need.
How can I look at my shipping history?
It’s easy to peruse the shipments you’ve sent through Redline Shipping.
Go to RedlineShipping.com and log into your account. Go to "My Account", then “Orders”, where you will find your complete purchase history.
Why do you want my package weight and dimensions?
FedEx bases its transportation charges on three things:
- Service. For example, FedEx Priority Overnight.
- Distance. The farther you send something, the more it costs.
- Weight/Size. The heavier/larger something is, the more it costs.
Weight can be determined in two ways:
- The actual weight. Put your box on a scale. 3.9 lbs. Straightforward.
- Dimensional weight. This might seem tricky, but it’s actually pretty simple. FedEx multiplies the package length x width x height, then divides by 139. That number is your package’s dimensional weight. (UPS uses the exact same calculation)
Example: Length 12" x Width 12" x Height 9" / 139 = 9.32 lbs.
FedEx looks at your package’s actual weight and dimensional weight then uses the heavier of the two, rounded up to the nearest whole number. So this package bills as 10 pounds.
If you could ship that same animal/item in a 12" x 9" x6" box, one of our most popular box sizes, dimensional weight is only 5 pounds. A 5-pound box will be MUCH less expensive to ship than an 10-pound box. Always use the smallest box you can safely and responsibly use. The larger the box, the more expensive it will be to ship.
LASER NOTE! They measure your package with 17 lasers. If they determine your package is bigger than you said it was, they will charge Redline Shipping an adjustment fee—then we’ll have to charge you that adjustment fee. So measure carefully, enter your package dimensions and weight accurately.
When will my package arrive?
If you have already booked your Priority Overnight label, the Guaranteed Time of Arrival (GTA) will be displayed in the lower right quadrant of the label, as shown. For most business addresses, your Priority Overnight package will arrive by 10:30 a.m. Tuesday through Friday. There is NO DELIVERY on Saturday or Sunday. DO NOT send a live animal package on Friday; it will not arrive until Monday, and that is not acceptable.
The GTA for most urban and suburban residential addresses is 12:00 noon. More rural addresses may have a GTA of 5:00pm.
NOTE: When looking at "Quick Quotes," only the zip code is used to determine the estimated cost of the label. Without the specific address details, the final price and the GTAs listed may be off. Use "Book a Shipment" to get the most accurate quote for both cost and delivery times.
Businesses often have morning drop-offs. If morning delivery is essential, consider sending your package to a business address.
When you're shipping live animals, it's important that your recipient be available to receive your package, no matter when it arrives.
- If you require delivery confirmation, the recipient must be alert, ready and waiting for the FedEx driver. You do not want the package going back onto the truck for delivery the next day.
- If you do not require delivery confirmation, tell your recipient to check the front and back doors, the porch—all around the house—to make sure the package doesn't sit outside.
Special note for Alaska and Hawaii
Do not ship live reptiles to Hawaii. More on that here.
Because of its remoteness and limited FedEx services, most zip codes in Alaska require one or more additional days for pickup and delivery of overnight shipments, and many zip codes have no delivery options at all.
To make absolutely sure you are not sending a package to one of these locations, please contact Redline Shipping customer service at 303-347-0500 or Contact Us for further detail and insight.
The label I just bought has today’s dates on it, but I don’t want to use it until later. What do I do?
You can always book your label in advance. That is a very common practice.
The Redline Shipping system assumes the day you create your label is the day you will be shipping. However, you can print your label any time within 30 days of booking your shipment. It can be used any time within those 30 days, but it can only be used once.
Do not worry about the date on the label. The label does not become "active" until it's scanned by FedEx. Once you put the package into the system, all tracking and delivery information will update appropriately.
Note: If you book your label before the day you will be shipping, please be sure to check the top of the Redline Shipping home page on the day of shipping (before you ship) for any warnings or restrictions.
Note: If you do not use your label within 30 days of creating it, Contact Us or call 303-347-0500. We will issue a full refund for the unused label. You can create a new one as needed. You must contact us within 30 days to receive a refund on an unused label.
How long is my shipping label good for?
Your label is good for 30 days.
If you will not use your label within 30 days of purchase, Contact Us or call 303-347-0500. We will issue a full refund for the unused label. You can then create a new one as needed. You must contact us within 30 days to receive a refund on an unused label.
Can I find a FedEx Facility without booking a label?
Absolutely!
Click on "Get Help" in the banner across the top of the page. Then select "Find FedEx Facilities" in the drop down menu. Fill in the relevant zip code, and you'll get a selection of all the nearest ship centers that are qualified to accept Live Animal shipments.
